WORCESTER, MA (August 13, 2026) – In the second quarter of 2026, Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives (MBI), a non-profit dedicated to creating a biomanufacturing hub in Central Massachusetts, announced the launch of its inaugural Auxilium-MBI Accelerator cohort, welcomed a new incubator tenant, celebrated the graduation of four companies from its SPARK mentorship program, and garnered recognition through regional awards and grant support.

Auxilium-MBI Accelerator Launches with $1M Investment

The Auxilium-MBI Accelerator, a joint initiative between Auxilium Worcester and MBI, launched in Q2 with a cohort of four life sciences and healthcare startups that will be located in Worcester during the program. The three-month accelerator program provides participating companies with $250,000 in seed investment, mentorship from industry veterans, access to MBI’s incubation facilities, and sector-specific programming. The program represents a significant step forward in positioning Central Massachusetts as an attractive destination for growth-stage life sciences ventures seeking operational space, technical infrastructure, and proximity to the UMass Chan Medical School ecosystem.

New Incubator Tenant

I2 Pharma Solutions, a boutique, state-of-the-art pharmaceutical R&D services company with a passion for advancing innovation in formulation and analytical development through science and precision, joined MBI’s incubator in Q2. The addition brings MBI to 94% capacity as demand for specialized lab and office environments continues to grow across the region.

SPARK Mentorship Program Celebrates Four Company Graduations

Four companies completed MBI’s Spring 2026 SPARK Mentorship program this quarter, each advancing their business objectives through intensive guidance and industry expertise. The free, eight-week program pairs early-stage entrepreneurs with experienced mentors to address focused business challenges. This quarter’s graduates are:

• Synchro Biotech, located at MBI, is an early stage CRO providing advanced analytical services with a focus on biologics, bioconjugate, and gene therapy customers.

• Microvitality has developed an ingestible capsule that collects fluid biopsies from the small intestine for direct microbiome and molecular profiling. The technology supports diagnosis and accelerates discovery and drug development for gut health.

• EpiGo has developed a patented compact epinephrine injector and has early proof-of-concept prototypes.

• NanoVax Therapeutics is an early-stage company developing nanoparticle-based cancer vaccines. They are a spin out from the UMass Amherst, operating in labs at UMass Chan Medical School.

Company Milestones and Leadership Appointments

Companies located at MBI’s incubator achieved significant milestones this quarter:

• Eascra Biotech: appointed Anne Yau, Ph.D., M.Sc., as its new Life Science Research Scientist, strengthening its research and development capabilities.
• SauveBio: appointed Paul Wengender as Chief Commercial Officer, positioning the company for accelerated market engagement and revenue growth.

Other Regional Updates that Underscore Growing Momentum

MBI participated in and hosted several ecosystem-building initiatives this quarter, received statewide grant funding to support the region, and honored a long-time champion of the life sciences cluster in Central MA:

• MBI’s Worcester Life Science Startup Showcase at the Cambridge Innovation Center in Kendall Square brought founders, investors, and ecosystem partners together in Boston/Cambridge to highlight the region’s emerging talent and opportunities.
• StartUp Week Worcester, organized by Auxilium Worcester, featured a panel hosted at MBI, ‘Life Sciences Startup Funding Today,’ which explored capital access, investor perspectives, and pathways to growth for early-stage companies.
• MBI’s Biomanufacturing Central launched a new candidates page, providing a centralized resource for workforce professionals seeking opportunities in the region’s growing biomanufacturing sector.
• MBI received support through the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center’s BioBoost program, which awarded $3.5 million to projects across the Commonwealth aimed at strengthening manufacturing capacity, supporting commercialization, and helping companies scale and remain in Massachusetts. This investment will advance MBI’s work to help life sciences companies scale and stay in the region as they grow.
• Jochen Salfeld, retired Chief Scientific Officer of Global Immunology and Chief Technology Officer at AbbVie, received MBI’s 2026 Dr. Abraham W. Haddad Award in recognition of his visionary leadership and contributions to the life sciences industry.

MBI’s StartUp & ScaleUp incubator model bridges the gap between early-stage launch and commercial growth. The StartUp space offers small, private labs for founders to validate concepts and launch companies. As they grow, companies can transition to the ScaleUp space, which offers larger accommodations and private office suites designed for scaling teams and expanding operations. MBI’s Pilot Biomanufacturing Center provides facilities designed to support early-stage clinical manufacturing. This approach allows companies to access right-sized space as they grow, freeing up startup labs for new, promising founders to enter the pipeline.
