MBI has had a $2.25 billion economic impact on the region
Worcester, MA (10/10/24) – Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives (MBI) unveiled its 40th Anniversary Impact Report, highlighting four decades of success in advancing life sciences innovation and economic growth in Central Massachusetts. Announced at MBI’s 40th anniversary event on September 12, 2024, the report outlines the organization’s role in fostering the local biomanufacturing ecosystem, supporting cutting-edge startups, and driving job creation in the region. The Impact Report reveals that MBI-supported startups have created more than 1,860 jobs since its inception and that MBI has had a $2.25 billion economic impact on the region. Through MBI, its partners in industry, and government’s efforts, the region is now home to over 5,441 life science focused jobs.
The event also marked the launch of Biomanufacturing Central Massachusetts, a dedicated platform to position Central Massachusetts as a global leader in biomanufacturing. Biomanufacturing Central Massachusetts will serve as a resource hub for companies, candidates, investors, and partners looking to tap into the region’s expanding capabilities in this field.
“Our 40th Anniversary Impact Report not only showcases our history of success, but more importantly, it sets the stage for what’s next,” said Jon Weaver, President and CEO of MBI. “We’re committed to transforming Central Massachusetts into a world-class biomanufacturing hub, and the launch of BiomanufacturingCentral.bio is the first step towards that goal. We’ve cultivated an environment of innovation and collaboration, and now we’re laser-focused on scaling that impact globally.”
Weaver emphasized MBI’s vision for the next decade, which focuses on strengthening the biomanufacturing infrastructure in the region, attracting global investment, and continuing to support life sciences entrepreneurship.
“We’ve built strong foundations, and now we’re accelerating. The future of biomanufacturing is here in Central Massachusetts, and our region is poised to lead globally,” said Weaver.
