Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives and Thermo Fisher Scientific Announce Sponsorship Agreement for Worcester-Based Incubator

December 14, 2023 / press release

Worcester, MA (December 13, 2023)Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives (MBI), the longest-running nonprofit life science startup incubator in the Commonwealth, announced today that it has signed a sponsorship agreement with Thermo Fisher Scientific. This agreement will support a state-of-the-art instrument suite designed to further support MBI in meeting the region’s demand for innovative solutions in delivering lifesaving products to patients.

“Bioincubator organizations like MBI play a critical role in this industry by equipping researchers with the necessary tools, support and laboratory space required to ignite scientific discovery,” said Kim Baltier, vice president of global commercial operations, biosciences at Thermo Fisher. “Through our agreement with MBI, Thermo Fisher proudly supports their tenants’ important work that is focused on pushing the boundaries of science in a way that could lead to new approaches to treat, cure or prevent disease.”

The agreement establishes the Thermo Fisher Scientific Instrument Suite at MBI’s Briden Street location, which will be furnished with advanced research equipment, including a qPCR system, fluorescence imaging system and a plate reader, along with supply centers and technical support. Having access to such resources will enable MBI’s incubator tenants to accelerate R&D, produce high-quality data and results and advance progress toward their scientific goals.

“We are grateful to Thermo Fisher for their commitment to help our companies grow from concept to clinical trials,” said Zu Shen, Vice President of MBI. “Ensuring that our companies have access to the latest and greatest technology helps them focus on what they do best: science. Thermo Fisher is an incredible partner to the Commonwealth and to MBI. We look forward to continuing our partnership to make Central Massachusetts the destination for life sciences.”

Thermo Fisher’s Instrument Suite is a part of MBI’s Blue Beaker Campaign, which aims to fully fund its pilot biomanufacturing center. The expansion will add 10 new pilot biomanufacturing labs to support startups in early-stage clinical trials, process development, and manufacturing.
