Massachusetts has long been a global leader in life sciences research. Now, through the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center’s new BioBoost Manufacturing Scale-Up program, the Commonwealth is investing in the infrastructure and manufacturing capacity needed to help innovative companies grow, scale, and stay in Massachusetts.

MBI is proud to be among the organizations selected to receive BioBoost funding, joining partners across the state in strengthening Central Massachusetts’ biomanufacturing ecosystem.

The funding we receive will support advancements at MBI that, in turn, support growing companies, yet its impact extends far beyond a single project. It reflects the Commonwealth’s continued commitment to ensuring that breakthrough discoveries can be developed and manufactured right here in Massachusetts.

That commitment closely aligns with MBI’s Regional Biomanufacturing Strategy, developed in collaboration with more than 70 leaders from industry, higher education, government, and economic development. The strategy outlines a roadmap for transforming Central Massachusetts into a nationally recognized biomanufacturing hub by expanding workforce development, supporting startup growth, and strengthening the infrastructure companies need to scale successfully, helping bridge the gap between discovery and commercialization. It specifically calls for the establishment of a toolkit to incentivize large scale biomanufacturing in Central MA. States across the country are providing significant incentives to entice the industry out of Greater Boston. The strategy argues that Central Massachusetts needs to have the tools to compete nationally and globally to help spur more speculative lab and manufacturing development in Massachusetts communities outside of I-495 where the economics of construction more closely align with our out-of-state competitors. The BioBoost program accomplishes this recommendation by providing capital investments that support expansion of biomanufacturing activity across the state.

By supporting organizations that expand biomanufacturing capacity, the Commonwealth is creating an environment where innovative companies can start, scale, and succeed without leaving the region. As more companies look for places where they can efficiently move from research to manufacturing, investments like the MLSC BioBoost award position Central Massachusetts as an essential part of the Commonwealth’s life sciences future.
