Pilot Biomanufacturing Center

In 2023, MBI cut the ribbon on its Pilot Biomanufacturing Center. The expansion added 10 new labs to MBI that support startup companies in process development, early clinical trials, and early-stage manufacturing. The 15,000-square-foot facility also included 10 new support offices on the second floor overlooking the labs.

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center invested $3.5 million from its Research Infrastructure program to help fund the expansion. MBI has also received $200,000 in private gifts from Philip R. Morgan and the David R. Grenon Family Foundation and $375,000 from MBI graduate company, Biocytogen, to help fund the project.

“This space is a milestone not just for MBI, our companies, and Central Massachusetts, but for the Commonwealth as a whole,” said Jon Weaver, President and CEO of MBI at the Grand Opening. “As the life sciences sector grows and changes across the state, we have so much opportunity to increase our competitiveness on the international market. This project furthers our efforts to make Central Massachusetts the global leader in biomanufacturing.”

When growing companies move to the Pilot Biomanufacturing Center, it opens up space in the incubator for new, promising companies to enter the pipeline while allowing those emerging companies to focus on job creation and bringing their products to market in a space designed to support their needs at this stage in the life cycle.
