Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park

The Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park (Biotech Park) was developed in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s through a collaborative effort of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Worcester Business Development Corporation (WBDC), UMass Chan Medical School, Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, and MBI. The lead developer of the park, the WBDC acquired approximately 75 acres of the former Worcester State Hospital complex from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Biotech Park was one of the first parks nationwide constructed solely for biotechnology research. Because of Worcester’s lower cost of living, highly skilled workforce, numerous educational partners, and available land, it is an ideal location for the Commonwealth to target opportunities to retain biomanufacturing. The recent investments by UMass Chan Medical School, the Department of Mental Health, and the City of Worcester make the Worcester Biomanufacturing Zone the ideal location for this economic opportunity and growth.

The development created a pre-permitted, low-cost location with the available infrastructure to support the growth of the Biomanufacturing economy in Massachusetts and have biotech companies in the Worcester-Cambridge Biomedical Corridor a local, in-state alternative to manufacture their products.

The addition of the Reactory Biomanufacturing Park in the Biotech Park represents a significant expansion of the park’s ability to foster innovation and support life sciences companies. This state-of-the-art campus offers customizable spaces for biomanufacturing, enabling companies to scale their operations while benefiting from the collaborative environment of the research park. Its inclusion in the Biotech Park further solidifies Worcester’s position as a hub for biomanufacturing and exemplifies the region’s commitment to driving economic growth and innovation in the life sciences.
